We make custom oak table tops and desk tops
“Made to measure in our London workshop. Delivered across the UK. Your shape, your size, your finish.”
At Tablemaker, we make solid oak table tops and desk tops to any size and shape. We can build a new top for an existing base. We can build a plain top for a DIY project. We can also build a fully custom desk top with cut-outs, cable notches or live edges. Every top is made from solid European oak. We never use veneer or engineered board. Each top is hand-finished in our London workshop. That makes us a strong pick for custom oak tabletops and bespoke solid wood desk tops across the UK.
See the selection below and please get in touch to discuss a quotation. Tops start from around £180 depending on size, thickness and finish.

Rectangular and Square Solid Oak Tops
The rectangular oak top is our most popular format. It suits dining tables, desks, boardroom surfaces and hallway consoles. We match the boards by grain so the lines flow across the top. This gives the look of a single plank rather than a glue-up. It matters if you want a high-end look that feels like a real piece of timber. Thickness ranges from 19mm up to 40mm+. You can pick a true thick top, a slim top, or our popular “false edge” build.
Dark Oak Top with Square Eased Edges
Table top in solid oak, 30mm thick with square eased edges and finished in a dark tinted hardwax oil. This matches the industrial style wooden ‘box section’ legs.
Table Top with Built-up False Edges
Table top in solid oak: 24mm throughout and 40mm at the edges, which are built up to give the appearance of a thicker material.
The false edge is also known as a boxed edge or plinth edge. It gives the look of a chunky oak slab at a lower cost. The top also weighs far less than a real 40mm slab. That works well for long dining tables. A slim top on a long table can look under-scaled. The finish is ‘warm tint’ hardwax oil.
Square-Edge Cafe / Restaurant Oak Table Top
Cafe/restaurant table top in solid oak 24mm. It is finished in a durable, clear hardwax oil and has a small roundover on the top edge for comfort.
Round Solid Oak Table Tops
Round oak table tops are built in two steps. First, we join the planks into a square blank. Then we cut the circle to the exact size. Most diameters range from 60cm up to 180cm or more. Small 60cm tops suit bistro use. Large tops over 180cm suit big dining rooms. Round tables also seat more people in a small footprint. That is why they are popular in restaurants and compact dining rooms. We can also make smaller round oak coffee table tops and side table tops to match.
Dark Oak Round Restaurant Table Top
A round table top for a restaurant, finished in a dark hardwax oil to match the decor. The customer used their own bases, but wanted to refresh the look of the venue with new solid oak table tops.
Round Coffee Table Top in Clear-Oiled Solid Oak
A round coffee table top in solid oak 24mm thick, finished in a clear hardwax oil. The edge has a 4mm roundover.
A soft edge suits round tops well. A roundover or bullnose edge profile matches the curve in a natural way. A square-eased edge works too if you want a cleaner look.
Oval and Curved Solid Oak Tops
Oval and “race track” shaped tops are a nice middle ground. They seat more people than a round top. But they feel softer than a rectangle. They work well in narrow dining spaces. The curved ends make it easier to walk past without catching a sharp corner. That is a common brief for family homes with young children. It is also popular in premium hospitality fit-outs. See our racetrack-shaped table project for inspiration.
Oval Solid Oak Coffee Table Top
Oval table top made from solid oak and coated in a hardwax oil, with a satin, clear finish. The top shape was supplied by the customer and replicated by us from a template.
Race Track Shape Oak Top with Radius Corners
This table top has 300mm radius rounded corners and a square eased edge. It is finished in a satin, clear hardwax oil.
Bullnose-Edged Wide-Curved Oak Dining Top
Wide curved corners on this dining table top create a ‘race track’ style shape. To complement the curves, the edge has a bullnose profile. The coating is clear hardwax oil.
You can send us a photo, a CAD file or even a cardboard template. We can copy the exact curve you have in mind. We often work from customer templates for one-off oval shapes.
Bespoke Shape Table and Desk Tops
Sometimes a project calls for a shape that is not round, oval or rectangular. In those cases, we can make fully bespoke table tops and custom desk tops. We work from your drawing, CAD file or template. Common jobs include wave-front boardroom tables, faceted tops and asymmetric coffee tables. We also build undulating desks and multi-part surfaces that join on site.
Undulating L-shape Desk Top
Our client wanted a desk with a bespoke curved shape and we made this top from a cardboard template supplied by them. It is finished in a dark tinted hardwax oil. It was made in two parts to form an undulating L shape and joined with screws on site. There are cable notches in central positions, as specified by the customer.
L-Shaped Oak Desk Top
L-shaped desk top, paired with box section square legs. The desk top was supplied in two parts and joined using removable worktop bolts on-site.

Bevelled Edge Table Tops
A bevelled edge gives the top a crisp, angled profile. It catches light in a different way to a square or round edge. The bevel is a Scandinavian-inspired detail. It slims down the top by eye, so even a 30mm slab looks lighter. It also pairs well with pale clear-oiled oak and soft painted bases.
Bevelled-Edge Oak Top with Roundover for Comfort
The edge profile on this 24mm top is bevelled for a Scandinavian-inspired look. While the majority of the edge has a bevel, the top has a 4mm roundover to ensure comfort for arms when resting on it. The top has a satin, clear hardwax oil finish.
We usually add a small 4mm roundover on the top edge too. That keeps the surface comfy for arms and forearms. It is a small detail but it makes a big daily difference.
Rounded Edge (Bullnose) Table Tops
A rounded edge, or bullnose, is the softest edge we offer. It removes any hard line and feels tactile under the hand. It suits family dining tables and any custom desk top where comfort matters at the elbow.
Rounded-Edge Oak Dining Top
The rounded top edge on this table top gives it an organic, soft look that contrasts with the angled, mid-century style legs that were chosen to pair with it. The top is 24mm thick and finished in clear hardwax oil.

Gaming Style Desk Tops
A gaming desk top has a different brief to a writing desk. It needs to hold monitors, mounts and peripherals. It often needs a lower “keyboard shelf” area too. That keeps you comfy over long play sessions. Our gaming desk tops combine a sloped front edge with an inset cut-out. The cut-out brings the keyboard closer to the body. The raised “wings” on each side hold the mouse, drinks and audio kit.
Solid Oak Gaming Desk Top with Sloped Front and Shelf-Drawer Unit
A classic gaming style desk top has two key features – a sloping front edge and an inset section. This solid oak top has both and is finished in our warm tint hardwax oil option. Mounted onto the back of the desk top is a solid oak shelf with birch plywood drawers, oiled to match.
Gaming desks often carry heavy kit. So we suggest a 24mm top with straightening bars underneath. Or a full 30mm top if you want more strength. The bigger spec resists long-term sagging. We will advise based on your total length.
Solid Oak Table Tops for Cafes, Restaurants and Bars
Hospitality tops take a lot of abuse. They deal with spills, hot plates, strong cleaners and heavy daily use. So we spec finishes and thickness a bit differently for trade. Our cafe and restaurant table tops are normally 24mm solid oak. We use a tough, food-safe hardwax oil as the finish. The key benefit is that you can spot-repair one damaged area. You do not need to strip the whole top. That means a single scratch or ring can be fixed without closing the venue. The same build suits hotel table tops and wine bar fit-outs too.
Cafe/Restaurant Oak Top Batch
Standard cafe table tops in solid oak 24mm for a busy wine bar/bistro. The dark hardwax oil makes a durable, spill resistant surface suitable for a busy commercial environment.
High-End Oak Restaurant Top with Rounded Corners
Designed for a trade setting, this solid oak table top in 24mm thickness makes for a neutral but high end option. The finish is satin, clear hardwax oil and the corners have been rounded to ensure end user customers can move around them comfortably when there is a closely packed layout.
Wall-Mounted Bevelled Cafe Oak Tops
Wall hung table tops were this customer’s creative solution to having limited floor space when opening his new premium coffee shop. For a modern aesthetic he requested the top edges to be bevelled, which complemented the floating appearance of the tops. These cafe table tops are suspended on custom built metal brackets that were powder coated in a RAL colour to match the bespoke painted coffee machine.
For busy venues, we often quote in sets of 5, 10 or 20 tops. We can also build to match over time. So if you need a replacement in a few years, it will blend in. That is useful for trade buyers planning a rollout.

Custom Oak Desk Tops for Bisley Cabinets
The Bisley filing cabinet desk has become a modern classic. We often supply solid oak tops cut to fit one, two or three Bisley units. The cabinets are fairly slim. So these tops look best in 19mm or 24mm solid oak — see our thickness guide. A thicker top would swamp the cabinets and unbalance the piece. This is one of the rare times we suggest going thinner.
Solid Oak Desk Top Sized for a Bisley Cabinet Pair
A customer who was inspired by seeing DIY desks made using Bisley filing cabinets asked us to help make her one by supplying the top. She wanted the desk top to be as sleek as possible but still be in a high quality material, so we used 19mm solid oak with a satin, clear hardwax oil.
To order a DIY-style Bisley desk top, send us the outer size of your cabinets. Also tell us the overhang you want on each side. We will do the rest. The top will ship ready to sit straight on the units.
Solid Oak Tops for Sit-Stand and Standing Desks
Sit-stand desks need a slightly different build. The top must cope with being raised and lowered many times a day. It should not warp or come loose over time. Our custom standing desk tops are usually 24mm solid oak. We can pre-drill the top if you send us the frame specs. Then it bolts straight onto a FlexiSpot, Friska, IKEA, Yo-Yo, Desktronic or similar motorised base. We can also add cable notches, rounded corners and live edges. That is why we are a go-to choice for bespoke solid wood sit-stand desk tops.
Live-Edge Style Solid Oak Sit-Stand Desk Top
This solid oak table top for a standing desk was given a live edge effect as the client wanted it to appear as a natural waney edge slab. He wanted it to have an indented area so he could get closer to the monitor but also make use of more desk space at the sides.
Custom Sit-Stand Desk Top
The room available for this sit stand desk was restricted so the customer asked us to cut a notch, to his supplied dimensions, allowing it to clear a radiator. The desk top is 24mm solid oak in clear hardwax oil and has rounded corners.
Got a standing-desk frame already? See our gaming desk top project for another example, or have a look at our guides for FlexiSpot, Friska, IKEA, Yo-Yo and Desktronic. Or send us the frame model and we will confirm drilling and sizing.
“A great quality desktop, lovely wood and well constructed. Goods comms on customisation, we got exactly what we wanted, would highly recommend”
